VOLUNTEERING
The Golgotha congregation consists of people who have arrived in Australia after spending between five and twenty-one years in refugee camps in East Africa.
When a new Swahili speaking individual or family arrive in the Playford region of South Australia from a refugee camp, the Golgotha Church supports the new arrivals. The Church does not know how many or when they will arrive. For example, in In July 2022, seventeen people arrived. The Golgotha Church provides assistance to new arrivals with practical things including:
Clothing
Food
Transport
Accompanying to appointments
Shopping
Accommodation
Furniture
Driving lessons.
They are often stretched to meet these needs, time, resources and funds.
The Golgotha community consists of a number of low-income households. Rising rent and food costs mean for those living on New Start Allowance, they are living on a survival level. Separate to their Church giving, many in the congregation send money to their families in their originating home countries.
